Cobh Traditional Sail Regatta 2012

The annual Cobh Traditional Sail Regatta will be held from 29th June to the 1st July 2012, on the waters adjacent to the amphitheatre of the town of Cobh. The event is organised in association with The Cove Sailing Club and the Naval Service Yacht Squadron. It is an opportunity to enjoy both sea and shore activities with welcome barbeques, traditional music, sea shanties and an eventful prize giving ceremony.

Our pennant derives from the Cork one design a boat that could be crewed by four people, would be particular to the local requirements and conditions and built for under £100. The first six were built by the Carrigaloe Gridiron & Works Company and were launched in June of 1896. Two more were to be built at Carrigaloe, three at Passage West and one in Baltimore, West Cork, bringing the total to 12. Sadly only a few remain but we hope once again to see those graceful craft turned out in all their finery.

Last year’s event, our inaugural outing, we hoped would attract at least twenty traditional boats, our expectations were exceeded with a entry of thirty two boats, which provided a magnificent display of colour and style, especially on the Sunday when the Sea Gods favoured us with sunshine and a fair wind.

Visit our photo gallery, the photos by our resident photragher, Leon Allen, supplemented by some excellent shots by Alan o Reagan will bring a traditional sail event to life. As always additional berthage will be provided, but there will still be a requirement for smaller boats to raft up to the larger vessels. A marina Manager will supervise the berthing and safety boats will be on hand for all events.

The cost of entry will be €20/boat with each skipper receiving our now famous pack. This year we introduce Sea Shanties to our regatta, with performances on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday in order to compliment the concerpt of tradational sailing.

In 2012 any event related to the sea must reflect on the sad events of one hundred years ago. It makes us acutely aware of the need for safety at all times and acknowledges the services of those organisations that provide assistance to ALL seafarers in time of need. It is hoped to have a wreath laying ceremony on the Sunday Morning to hour those lost so tragically on 14th April 2012.

A range of tradsail merchandise will also be availible for sale this year. Nants and bags available at €10 each. There are also jackets available with the trad sail logo and our famous quote. Be Safe to Sail and hopefully we will see you next year for another Trad Sail.

I hope you will have the opportunity in 2012 to fly your pennant as the Cobh Traditional Sail motto says

“THOSE who wander are not always LOST”
